POME (Palm Oil Mill Effluent)
Short description
Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) is a liquid waste byproduct generated during the extraction of crude palm oil at palm oil mills. Rich in organic matter, nutrients, and suspended solids, POME is a thick, brownish wastewater that, if left untreated, can have a significant environmental impact due to its high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). However, with proper treatment, POME can be transformed into valuable resources and contribute to sustainable production.
Description
POME is often treated through anaerobic digestion, which helps reduce its environmental footprint by capturing methane, a potent greenhouse gas. This methane can be converted into biogas, a renewable energy source, that can be used to power palm oil mills or other facilities. Additionally, the treated effluent can be repurposed as organic fertilizer or irrigation water for agricultural purposes, further promoting sustainability within the palm oil industry.
At our palm oil mills, we are committed to managing Palm Oil Mill Effluent responsibly by employing advanced treatment technologies. Our approach minimizes waste, reduces pollution, and supports the circular economy, turning a waste product into energy and beneficial byproducts for agricultural use.
